Demonstration, Auction and Annual Competition Presentation Evening
We had a busy night for our last meeting of the year, unfortunately our Chairman Ritchie couldn’t be with us due to illness and we hope he can get back to 100% fitness for the Festive period.
The evening started with Paul Williams (no1) as we have two Paul Williams, he had decided to show us how he makes shaving bowls, importantly to fit the shape of the soap inserts. His wood for the bowl was Maple and Cherry for the lid with a bog oak knob for the lid.
Starting on the bowl he had prepared the outside to save time and started hollowing out the inside using a small bowl gouge, producing, long ribbons of shavings and then seeing if the soap would fit, a little tweak and it was done.
Now for the lid in Cherry, turning the inside of the lid, he left a small tenon so when reversed it would hold without damaging the rim. He reversed the bowl and drilled a 5mm hole to 6mm depth to receive the knob, then shaping the lid, then fitting the Bog Oak Knob finishing with sanding sealer.
Paul also showed some the bowels he made for Charity including a fantastic water droplet bow explaining how he achieved the 3d effect.
Annual certificate presentation:-
Vice Chairman Mark Wooward (he must bring his reading glasses next time) presented the certificates for the Open Class and Advanced Class both with 3 sections small, medium, and large. Our Photographer (Paul Huyton) was kept busy.
There were a number of photographs taken of those who attended to collect their certificates:-
Some of the recipients received more than one award:-
The Auction:-
The auction was based around what demonstrators had done throughout the year, Chris Parker, Andrew Hall, Denis Wake, Steve Heeley and we thank them for as well as demonstrating, supporting our funds. We also auctioned off wood blanks tools and a child’s carpentry set. The end result made our treasurer a very happy man.
It was a great evening with lots of laughs and a good way to end our year.
