The October demonstration did not start off too well, as there was an issue with the cameras.
The issue was that our chairman, Richie Southerton was ill. And unfortunately, no one else had experience of operating the cameras.
This meant that the first part of the demonstration was conducted without TV Pictures.
Fortunately, during the interval, some adjustments were made. And the cameras were working again.
A better experience was had in the second half.
This month Steve demonstrated to us a pestle and mortar.
Firstly, he turned the mortar showing various techniques using the bowl gouge, in fact several bowl gouges. He showed the purpose of each and why it was used for that purpose. He showed how the long grind could be used on the outside of the bowl and then to do a sheer scrape to achieve a very fine surface that needed hardly any sanding.
On the inside of the bowl he used a 45 standard grind explaining how that allowed him to turn the corner at the bottom of the bowl without hitting the side of the bowl this allowed him to achieve a smooth bottom when he passed round the mortar the exceptional finish could be seen.
He then went on to turn the pestle which was made-up of two parts a boxwood base and an ash handle. With this he demonstrated the techniques of spindle turning to achieve the correct shape for the pestle.

During the interval Steve was selling some turning blanks and tools as he is scaling back his woodturning. Proceeds from these sales are to go to Cancer research.
The demonstration was attended by approximately 40 members, who enjoyed, the demonstration
