A Three part raised bowl.

Our demonstrator for the evening was Denis Wake but before we started, our chairman Ritchie announced that at the November meeting we will be running an Auction in aid of club funds the pieces for the auction have been donated by the demonstrators who have recently attended the club: –
Andrew Hall, Wooden hat and stand
Chris Parker, Coloured and Embellished bowl
Dennis Wake, 3 part raised Bowl
We thank the demonstrators for donating these pieces and all three are Registered Professional Turners and it’s great that they have come to the club over the last 3 months but more importantly given our growing club encouragement with their teaching and skill.
It was Dennis’s first visit to us and it’s quite a distance from Hartlepool so we were all looking forward to the evening. He started by emphasizing the need for safety both when in our own workshops but also when demonstrating.
He was to demonstrate a 3-part raised bowl. In true Blue Peter fashion, he showed one he had produced earlier, the demonstration would include Spindle and Bowl turning, but more importantly form.
Starting with the base he turned this with an ogee form with and included a mortice to take the raised part of the piece, which needed very little sanding taking it down to 600grit then using Chestnut sanding sealer which he thinned down by adding about 25% thinners, then polishing with Hampshire Sheen. Importantly no finish, sealer or finish on the mortice.
Next came the pillar which was a great example of spindle turning, but also form, together with two tenons, one for the base and one for the top.
Dennis pointed out the need to view the piece in the direction it would be shown i.e. upright so the piece was removed on a number of occasions to make sure the proportions and shape were pleasing to the eye.
Then he started on the top part, again an ogee shape but slightly more flared, and thinner but balanced to compliment the base and pillar.
Dennis was warmly congratulated by our chairman for a great evening and hoped he would come back in 2025 to see us as we all enjoyed the clear way; he explains what he was doing that was appreciated by all members.
Finally, he had a table with some of his pieces and merchandise which members could see and purchase, he sold out of his own style of brush and bottle for sanding sealer.
Thank you to all the members helping to clear up and put the equipment away.
